The School of Philosophy and Social Development of South China Normal University has a long history, strong and vibrant researcher team and distinctive disciplines. It can be traced back to the Ideological and Political Education program initiated in 1953. For more than sixty years, after multiple disciplinary adjustment, the name of the school has evolved from Department of Politics, Department of Political History, Department of Politics and Law, School of Political Science and Law, School of Politics and Administration to the School of Philosophy and Social Development.
The school sets great store by disciplinary construction, qualified to grant degrees of Doctor, of Master, of Bachelor and to provide post-doctoral positions. The school has three undergraduate majors: philosophy, ideological and political education (high school teacher-oriented) and social work. Ideological and political education is a national first-class undergraduate major, a national distinguished major, a distinguished major in Guangdong Province, and a provincial first-class undergraduate major. The school is qualified to grant doctoral degree of philosophy and to grant master degree in philosophy, in history of the Chinese Communist Party, in ideology, and in social work. It also provides a mobile post-doctoral research station for philosophy, having a key discipline in Guangdong Province. The school is composed of Department of Philosophy, Department of Ideological and Political Education, and Department of Social Work. There are nearly 60 faculty members, including 14 professors, 14 associate professors, and 6 doctoral supervisors. Most of the teachers of the school graduated from well-known universities or research institutions at home and abroad. Some of them have title of CJ Scholar , Second-class professors, Chief experts of major projects of the National Social Science Fund, authors of the National Philosophy and Social Science Achievement Library, recipients of special government allowances, and leading talents in Guangdong Province , A group of national and provincial high-level talents such as the national "Thousand Hundred Ten Project" provincial-level training targets, outstanding teachers in South of Guangdong.
The school attaches importance both to scientific research and to teaching, and adheres to the principle of equal emphasis on scientific research and teaching. The school has a number of provincial and school-level quality courses, a provincial-level excellent teaching team, and teachers preside over important national, provincial and ministerial scientific research projects such as major projects of the National Social Science Fund and major projects of key research bases of the Ministry of Education. The academic monographs, translations and textbooks, high-level papers and translations published in important academic journals at home and abroad, and won national, provincial and ministerial levels of teaching and scientific research awards.
The school attaches great importance to academic exchanges at home and abroad, has hosted many international academic seminars, and established relatively stable academic exchanges and cooperation relationships with foreign universities and academic institutions such as the United States, Britain, France, and Canada. The university maintains close academic ties with research institutions.
The school has modern office conditions and facilities, a wealth of books and materials, a variety of databases and large electronic reading rooms, advanced office automation and social work laboratories, multimedia micro-teaching and research facilities.
Philosophy : Cultivate versatile talents with a firm political orientation, solid basic knowledge of philosophy, higher philosophical thinking ability, extensive knowledge background, broad international vision, generous humanistic background, and strong feelings of family, country and the world. This major has a complete talent training system of bachelor-master-doctoral-postdoctoral, and its school-running indicators are among the best in similar universities in China. This major mainly offers courses such as History of Chinese Philosophy, History of Western Philosophy, Marxist Philosophy, Logic, Introduction to Ethics, Principles of Aesthetics, Introduction to Religion, and Philosophy of Science and Technology.
Ideological and Political Education :National first-class undergraduate major, national characteristic major, and Guangdong famous brand major. It is ranked at the top 2% for the major in China. This major has a complete talent training system of bachelor-master-doctoral-postdoctoral, and its school-running indicators are among the best in similar universities in China. It mainly trains college political counselors, political cadres, teachers of ideological and political courses in secondary schools, ideological and political educators in various industries and civil servants of state agencies. This major mainly offers courses such as Marxist philosophy, principles of political economy, principles of political science, introduction to cultural studies, international politics and international relations, logic, principles of ethics, history of Chinese and foreign thoughts, ideological and political education, and research on political teaching in middle schools.
Social Work :This major mainly cultivates social management talents with good ideological and political quality, solid social work theoretical knowledge, and social work & investigation & research skills. This major mainly offers the courses such as Introduction to Sociology, Introduction to Social Work, Western Sociology Theory, Urban Sociology, Rural Sociology, Social Statistics, Population Sociology, Network Sociology, Social Risk and Crisis Management, Social Research Methods, Social Investigation Theory and Methods, Social Communication Skills, Community Work, Case Work, Social Activity Organization and Planning, and etc.
The school attaches great importance to intra-national and international academic exchanges. It has hosted many international academic seminars. The school has established a stable cooperation with foreign universities and academic institutions such as the United States, Britain, France, Canada, etc.. It is also well-known in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and China Universities and maintains close academic ties with the research institutions therein. The school has carried out exchange projects with Capital Normal University, Shaanxi Normal University, Nanjing Normal University, Southwest University, Taiwan Normal University and other colleges and universities in China; it has carried out a summer study tour to the United States "Student Leadership Training Camp", University of British Columbia (UBC) summer study exchange program in Canada, and summer study exchange program to Hong Kong Baptist University, etc.
In order to actively adapt to the requirements of social development, the School of Philosophy and Social Development focuses on improving students' comprehensive quality, focusing on cultivating innovation and practical ability, and improving scientific and humanistic quality as the goal. It actively carries out various activities and work projects to cultivate students to continuously improve their intelligent structure in six aspects: ideological and political accomplishment and leadership, specific literacy and professional skills, social practice and volunteer services, science and technology and innovation and entrepreneurship, club activities and social work, cultural, sports, and physical and mental development, fully grown into talents and achieved excellent results. In the past three years, our students have won the "Challenge Cup" Entrepreneurship Plan National Competition Gold Award, and the "Challenge Cup" Guangdong University Students Extracurricular Academic Technology Competition Special Prize; "Challenge Cup·Create Youth" Guangdong Province University Student Entrepreneurship Competition 2 silver prizes; 1 key project of the special project for the cultivation of scientific and technological innovation for Guangdong college students and 4 general projects; won multiple first prizes in the 6th Guangdong Normal University Teaching Skills Competition (Politics Group).
The School of Philosophy and Social Development not only strengthens the main teaching position, but also pays attention to the development of various student quality development activities to comprehensively improve the quality of talent training and has achieved initial results. The school’s student enrollment rate is increasing year by year, and the employment rate and quality of employment continue to improve. From 2015 to 2018, more than 1/4 of the undergraduate students of the whole school progressed to the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of Hong Kong, Nanyang Technological University, the University of Houston, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Renmin University of China, Beijing Normal University, Wuhan University, East China Normal University each year Universities, Central China Normal University, Xiamen University, Sun Yat-sen University and other domestic and foreign universities further advanced their studies. In 2019, the promotion rate reached 30.16%. In the past five years, the employment rate of undergraduate students has reached 98% or more. The placement mainly includes: middle schools, government agencies, enterprises and institutions, social welfare, social security, social administrative departments and social service agencies.
